Powersports Theft Protection

Smart Protection for Every Vehicle

Theft across powersports vehicles—jet skis, snowmobiles, ATVs, and similar recreational assets—continues to be a growing concern, especially as warmer months and outdoor activities ramp up. Jet skis, for instance, are frequently targeted due to their compact size and ease of transport. In 2019 alone, over 4,200 personal watercraft (PWC) thefts were reported, with Yamaha WaveRunners and Sea-Doos being the most commonly stolen. These thefts often occur when PWCs are stored on trailers, making them vulnerable to quick grab-and-go tactics. Recent reports from New York state highlight a surge in jet ski thefts even before peak summer, prompting local dealers and owners to install cameras and reinforce trailer locks.

Snowmobiles face a different seasonal risk, but the threat is no less severe. Between 2018 and 2019, snowmobile thefts in the U.S. more than doubled, with over 949 reported cases—a 101% increase year-over-year. The Midwest, particularly Minnesota and Michigan, saw the highest rates. Polaris and Ski-Doo models were the most frequently stolen, and while recovery rates are relatively high (with 96% recovered within a year), the initial loss and disruption remain significant.

ATVs are also prime targets due to their versatility and high resale value. Theft trends show that rural areas, where ATVs are commonly used for work and recreation, experience higher theft rates than urban centers. States like California, Texas, and Florida consistently report elevated numbers. Thieves often exploit unsecured trailers, remote storage, and unattended vehicles at events. Recovery rates for ATVs are notably lower than for other powersports, largely because they’re easily disassembled and sold for parts.

Across all categories, theft tends to spike during peak usage seasons—summer for jet skis and ATVs, winter for snowmobiles. Preventive measures like GPS asset tracking, immobilizers, trailer locks, and secure indoor storage are increasingly recommended. As powersports ownership grows, so does the need for robust theft protection strategies tailored to each vehicle type.

DotGuard offers scalable, dealership-ready solutions that address these risks head-on.
