The Midwest, particularly Minnesota and Michigan, saw the highest rates. Polaris and Ski-Doo models were the most frequently stolen, and while recovery rates are relatively high (with 96% recovered within a year), the initial loss and disruption remain significant.

ATVs are also prime targets due to their versatility and high resale value. Theft trends show that rural areas, where ATVs are commonly used for work and recreation, experience higher theft rates than urban centers. States like California, Texas, and Florida consistently report elevated numbers. Thieves often exploit unsecured trailers, remote storage, and unattended vehicles at events. Recovery rates for ATVs are notably lower than for other powersports, largely because they’re easily disassembled and sold for parts.

Across all categories, theft tends to spike during peak usage seasons—summer for jet skis and ATVs, winter for snowmobiles. Preventive measures like GPS asset tracking, immobilizers, trailer locks, and secure indoor storage are increasingly recommended. As powersports ownership grows, so does the need for robust theft protection strategies tailored to each vehicle type.
